How does night vision on a camera work ?

January 6, 2012 - 3:34 pm 4 Comments

When light strikes an object, its atoms react and emit a very low frequency infrared wavelength, more similar to heat than to visible light. Night Vision Security Cameras are extremely sensitive to these thermal-infrared emissions and amplify them, converting the measurement of the invisible wavelength into an image on your monitor. This type of Night Vision is known as Thermal Imaging. While Thermal Imaging is great for detecting people or motion in near absolute darkness, most of the cameras sold here use a more practical kind of Night Vision known as Image Enhancement or Image Intensification. These devices contain a lens that senses light at a slightly higher frequency than thermal-infrared, anywhere from the more reflective infrared wavelengths to the barely visible red wavelengths. The light’s photons are converted to electrons and amplified through a component called the photocathode. The electrons are then converted back into photons to produce a strong visible image on your camera’s phosphor screen.

Which Eyeclops night vision product is better?

April 14, 2010 - 7:52 am 1 Comment

I am looking to purchase one of the eyeclops nightvision products as a present, But I wasn’t sure which one to purchase? It seems that a lot of reviews say that the binoculars are better as it has dual vision, whereas with the goggles you can only see through with one eye. However, the binoculars cannot be worn, which is something to consider. Which one would you recommend?

I suggest

Add enough lighting to satisfy your camera – then make things dark with your video editor to satisfy you.

How can you blind infrared or night vision cameras?

April 7, 2010 - 6:45 am 4 Comments

I’ve heard that if a CCTV camera that operates on a photoelectric sensor is exposed to infrared LEDs, it will be overwhelmed and will present the image as an opaque white light. Is there any way this type of interference can be done with night vision or infrared cameras, and if so, how?

Are you planning an illegal activity for which you need to disable CCTV? I cant tnink of any other reason anyone would want to know how to disable the equipment. Im surprised anyone would offer tips on how to do this. Advice on how to do things like this are how events like 9-11 are made possible.

Best night vision to view stars?

When I was in Iraq I had a chance to use he military issued night vision goggles in a very clear sky not hazed by city lights or the usual dust. I could see meteor showers with the goggles but not with the naked eye.

What would be the best commercial monocular night vision goggle, or camera to view stars that would be less than 500 dollars?

You just need the newest generation. A generation 2 is better than a generation 1. A generation 3 is better than a generation 2. I think they’re up to 4 or five now.

Infrared thermal imaging equipment?

March 31, 2010 - 9:17 am 2 Comments

there is a program in discovery channel "Animal Camera – Surveillance on Survival" that shows night life of animals. It uses ‘Infrared thermal imaging equipment’ technology. I have seen others night vision that uses infra red or thermal imaging but what they show in this program the picture are show clear even u can see shadow of animals in total dark , its just like black & white picture taken in day.
are these picture are edited to see a clear picture or its just b’coz of this new technology,
can one get these camera if yes where and what are they called??

Thermal imaging isn’t new technology. Are you sure they are using thermal imaging. If you can see shadows, then they are using near IR with a near IR illumination source. Thermal imaging picks up the heat signature and doesn’t use an illumination source, thus no shadows. Also, thermal IR has poor resolution due to the long wavelengths used (generally around 5 um). Another thing that makes me think this is near IR is the grey scale. Thermal IR cameras like to make use of colors to delineate the temperature.

You can get thermal imaging cameras if you don’t mind paying $5,000 for a junky system. If you don’t mind paying $30,000, you can get a pretty nice system. Near IR cameras are cheap, but can quickly escalate in price if you want quality.

How long can i see in Binoculars of 60X35?

March 24, 2010 - 8:01 am 2 Comments

I want to buy Binoculars w/Night Vision, but I do not know which one to buy so that I can see at a maximum distance so Please tell me which specifications I have to choose like 60X35 or lower or higher?

In case you don’t know, let me explain the meaning of the numbers. The first number is the magnification. In your example you used 60, in this case things would look 60 times closer. An object 60 feet away would appear as 1 foot away. The last number is the size of the objective lense. In your example 35, which would be 35 mm across. The larger the objective lense the more light it can collect. 12x is generally considered the max power that can be hand held [no tri pod] and that is hard for most people to hold steady enough to obtain a sharp image. Next comes the quality of the binoculars. All binoculars are far from being equal even though they may have the same power and objective lense size. A real good set of 12 x 50 night vison binoculars start out at around $800. and up.
