Infrared Flashlight for Night Vision?

I need to get a setup for night vision while playing airsoft and I cannot figure out about infrared light. Do you have to have night vision goggles to see the infrared light? I think I must be wrong but I thought infrared light (say a flashlight with an infrared filter on it) made the light so you could see in front of you but anyone looking at you couldn’t see the light coming out of the flashlight (if that makes sense.) So basically you can see downrange of the light but no one could see up-range. (If you need me to try and clarify this more I can send an email with a diagram showing what I mean.

You need to have some sort of sensor to detect the light.

Night Vision goggles either

A. Detect Infrared
B. Amplify light
C All of the above

The way that infrared cameras work is by actually emitting infrared light that is not visible to you. When the cameras sensor picks it up it "retunes" the light so that it is in your visible range.

That’s correct. IR filters are used over regular lights (flashlights, weapon lights or vehicle lights). The IR "light" is only visible with NVGs.
